Give A Dog A Bone

Shannon chewed her nylabone so much that one end became pointy. My Mom thought it wasn't safe so she took it away from her. But no worry Shannon has a new one now, and she loves it just like her old one.

Here's a tip for you folks with new puppies, get them in the habit of chewing on their own toys, if you catch them chewing on something they shouldn't, distract them with a chew toy. Once they become adults the only thing they will chew on is their own stuff.

In The Doghouse....Or Tent

I like how my chihuahua shapes her blanket into a "tent" and then just crawls in and out of the opening. Seems like she's going to be doing a lot of that, winter just doesn't want to leave. Last week the birds began chirping and then we got hit with snow, and now it's raining. Ah but I know spring is coming, I can feel it.

Anticipation

Even though it's still cold and there's snow on the ground, I can feel that spring is just around the corner. There's a lot more sun and my chihuahua is sure taking advantage of that picking a sunny spot in the house to feel the warmth of a sunny day. I wonder if she can tell that warmer days are ahead? I think she can.

Taking Baths

My Chihuahua doesn't like to take baths, but isn't that true of all dogs? At least she doesn't put up a fight the way she does with getting her nails clipped ( see blog Trimming Dog Nails post ). She just stands there in the laundry tub on her two hind legs clinging on to the edge of the tub like her life depended on it. But when it's over she's one happy pooch.

Do Dogs Understand Speech?

It's highly unlikely that dogs can understand language but did you ever notice how dogs seem to know when you're talking about them, even when you don't say their name? When my chihuahua is under the covers and I start talking about her she pokes her head out. I could be talking about anything and she'll be sound a sleep but when talk turns to be about her, there she is with a look that seems to say "you talking about me?" The other Chihuahuas I had in the past were the same way.

Here's another incident, my dog likes to sit on a chair in the living room and look out the front window, especially when she's expecting my brother. My brother was here yesterday, a day when he usually does not come, as he was on his way over I and my Mom began talking about him but we did not say his name. To my surprise my chihuahua stopped what she was doing (chewing her nylabone) and went and sat on the chair in the front window.

So what's with dogs, do they pick up some of our language without us knowing it? Better watch what you say around your dog.

Shannon and Her Nylabone

Is this the face of contentment or what? Shannon sure loves her nylabone, in fact she loves it so much that she broke a tooth on one.

Mouse Catching Chihuahua

One time when there were guests at the house, while they were sitting at the dining room table my Chihuahua Shannon walks in and one of the guests exclaims look, she caught a mouse! Ha, ha, the mouse my dog caught was her little stuffed toy mouse we call Mousey. Hey Shannon, wanna go catch some more mice?

Caring For Dogs In Winter

Winter is well along in many parts of the world and with the cold and snow come some things that could be hazardous to our dogs such as anti-freeze, keep it well out of reach and clean up any spills because dogs are attracted to its taste but it is deadly.

After getting home from a walk wipe your dog's paws with a warm damp cloth to prevent damage that can result from road salt. If you can get your dog to wear booties that would be even better.

Small dogs such as Chihuahuas, and dogs with short coats may need a sweater to help keep them warm in extra cold weather.

Be careful when walking near frozen streams and ponds, you don't want you or your dog falling through frozen ice.

And remember that skin can freeze in minutes so bundle up and keep walks short in extremely freezing weather.

Chihuahua Police Dog

A 6.6lb. long haired Chihuahua by the name of Momo (means peach) became Japan's newest police dog when she passed the search and rescue test, she found a person in only 5 minutes.

The pint sized dog will be used in rescue missions after disasters in the hope that she will be able to get into areas too small for other rescue dogs to enter.

Doggy In The Window

My Chihuahua has discovered the front window. Lately she's been spending a lot of time there because the road is getting a facelift and new sidewalks are being put in so she has a whole lot of barking to do. Now where did I put those ear plugs?

Chihuahuas Like Sunbathing

I was playing with my dog this morning in the hallway when suddenly she grabbed her toy and walked into a nearby room. I wondered what grabbed her attention so I went in after her. As I suspected she noticed the sun poking through the window and went to lie down in the spot where the sun's rays were hitting the floor. Typical chihuahua behavior if you ask me. I wonder if large dogs do the same thing.

My Dog Is Crazy About Me!

It's well into fall season and I have been outside raking leaves, all the while my chihuahua Little Shannon watches me from behind the glass door. When I come back into the house she acts so happy and excited it's as if she hasn't seen me in ages, even though I was outside maybe for around an hour or so and she was watching me the entire time. My chihuahua likes me, she really does. Are dogs cool or what?

Dog Toys Part 2

When I'm about to vacuum I walk through the house picking up dog toys scattered all around and put them into my chihuahua's toy box. While I'm vacuuming my chihuahua, Little Shannon quietly sits on her pillow, but soon as she sees that I'm finished she heads over to the toy box and one by one picks out the toys and scatters them all over the place again. I guess she's not much into tidiness.
